Game day, handled

Big game watch party food, timed to kickoff.

How many wings, how much chili and dip, and when everything hits the table — so the host actually watches the game.

Game food is grazing food

Nobody eats a plated dinner during a game — they eat continuously for four hours, heaviest in the first half. Plan 10–14 bites per person across the whole spread, put most of it out at kickoff, and hold one hot thing back for halftime so the table gets a second life.

The spread, by headcount

If wings are the whole show, double them — 12 per person, and nobody has ever said “too many wings.” Order from a wing place for pickup an hour before kickoff and transfer to a low oven; frying for 25 during pregame is how hosts miss the first quarter.

The kickoff-relative timeline

  • Morning: Chili in the slow cooker. Dips made (they’re all better after a few hours anyway). Drinks and ice into the cooler.
  • Kickoff minus 60: Pick up the wings. Oven to 250°F to hold them.
  • Kickoff: Chips, dips, veggies, sliders out. Chili station live.
  • Halftime: The held-back hot tray comes out — the table’s second wind while everyone’s up anyway.
  • Fourth quarter: Coffee quietly appears. Cookies with it. You’re a legend.

Quick answers

How many wings for 15 people?

About 105 with a full spread beside them, or 180 if wings are the main event. Split flavors 60/40 between a crowd-pleaser and something hot.

How much chili for 20?

Five quarts as a topping-bar station — more if it’s the anchor. It doubles fine and freezes better, so make extra.

What if kids are watching too?

Count kids as half portions on everything except pigs in blankets, where they mysteriously become double adults. A dedicated kid tray keeps small hands out of the buffalo sauce.
