Small guests, handled
Kids' birthday party food, without the guesswork.
Pizza, juice, and cake math for 10 to 20 kids — plus the two things most guides skip: the parents who stay, and the allergy question that belongs on the invite.
The two-hour rule, and who you're actually feeding
A kids’ birthday party is two hours, and food occupies exactly one slot in the middle — roughly minute 45 to minute 75, between the running-around and the cake. Kids eat about half an adult portion, they eat with their eyes, and they will not try the interesting thing. Plan simple, plan finger food, and plan for the real second audience: at ages 5 and under, parents stay — so a party of 12 kids is often a party of 12 kids plus 15 adults hovering near the coffee.
The quantities, by kid count
| What | Per kid | For 10 kids | For 15 kids | For 20 kids |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pizza (the eternal answer) | 2 slices | 3 large | 4 large | 5 large |
| Juice boxes | 1½ | 15 | 23 | 30 |
| Fruit (grapes halved for littles, berries) | ½ cup | 5 cups | 7½ cups | 10 cups |
| Crunchy snack (pretzels, crackers, popcorn) | 1 oz | 1 big bag | 1–2 | 2 |
| Cake | 1 kid slice | 9-inch round or ¼ sheet | ¼ sheet | ½ sheet |
| For the parents who stay | — | Coffee for 10–12, one adult snack tray, sparkling water. It costs $25 and buys enormous goodwill. | ||
Cake math is generous math — a quarter sheet officially serves 24, but kid slices, seconds, and take-home plates eat the margin. When between sizes, size up; leftover birthday cake has never been a problem in the history of birthdays.
The allergy question — ask it on the invite
One line on the invitation — “any food allergies we should know about?” — is the single most host-saving sentence in kids’ party planning. When something comes back:
- Keep packaging for anything store-bought, so a parent can read the actual label instead of trusting your memory.
- Label what contains the allergen rather than guessing what’s “free” of it — a “contains peanuts” card fails safely; a “nut-free!” guess doesn’t.
- Let that kid’s parent see the spread first. They’ve done this before; make them your co-pilot, not your auditor.
Quick answers
How much pizza for 15 kids?
Four large pizzas — 2 slices per kid plus a buffer. Keep it cheese-heavy: at most kid parties, cheese outsells everything else combined.
When do we do cake?
Last — roughly 20 minutes before pickup. Sugar, then hand them back. This is settled science among parents.
Do I feed the parents?
At drop-off ages (6+), just coffee is gracious. At stay-and-hover ages (5 and under), one adult tray and decent coffee turns a kid party into a good afternoon for everyone.
