Fed by 5:30, out by 6
Halloween party food that beats the doorbell.
Halloween is dinner on a deadline: real food by 5:30, costumes by 5:45, doorbell at 6. Here’s the math for the chili pot, the hot dog bar, and the candy bowl — scaled to your crowd.
The 5:30 problem
Every other party this site plans can start whenever you like. Halloween can’t. Trick-or-treating starts around 6 PM in most neighborhoods, which means the actual job of a Halloween party is getting protein into costumed children — and the adults chaperoning them — before a night of pure sugar. That’s why the classic Halloween menu is one big warm pot plus grab-and-go sides: it holds on the stove, serves in minutes, and nobody has to sit down.
The chili pot, by the numbers
Chili is the Halloween anchor for a reason — it’s cheap at scale, it holds for hours, and a ladle serves faster than any plate you could compose. Plan 1–1¼ cups per adult and half that per kid, and remember a gallon is 16 cups:
| Crowd | Chili | Ground beef to brown | Cornbread | Toppings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 (6 adults + 4 kids) | ½ gallon (2 quarts) | 2 lbs | 1 pan (9×13) | 8 oz cheese · 1 cup sour cream |
| 20 (12 adults + 8 kids) | 1½ gallons | 4–5 lbs | 2 pans | 1 lb cheese · 2 cups sour cream |
| 35 (20 adults + 15 kids) | 2½ gallons | 7–8 lbs | 3 pans | 1½ lbs cheese · 3 cups sour cream |
Kids count as half a portion — the same rule as every quantity table on this site — and on Halloween they eat even less than that. Do not be tempted to scale up "just in case"; the case you’re planning for is a pillowcase full of candy.
The no-chili path: hot dog bar or walking tacos
Hot dog bar
Count 1½ dogs per adult, 1 per kid. For 20 mixed guests that’s about 26 dogs — three standard 10-packs, with buns to match (buns come in 8s; buy four packs and stop doing that math forever). Set out mustard, ketchup, relish, and shredded cheese, and guests build their own.
Walking tacos
One single-serve bag of corn chips per person plus ⅓ cup of seasoned taco meat poured straight into the bag — about 4 lbs of ground beef for 20 guests. No plates, no forks-and-knives, fully costume-compatible. This is the correct choice if your party is mostly kids.
Candy math for the doorbell
The party and the porch are two budgets. Fun-size candy runs roughly 18–20 pieces per pound, and the standard hand-out is 2 pieces per trick-or-treater:
| Your street | Expected visitors | Candy to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet street | ~30 | 3–4 lbs |
| Steady traffic | ~60 | 6–7 lbs |
| The busy neighborhood | 75–100+ | 8–10 lbs |
When in doubt, buy the extra bag — unopened bags keep for months, and running out at 7:15 with the porch light still on is the one Halloween mistake worth avoiding.
Allergy note: if you’re labeling party treats, say what they contain ("contains peanuts") rather than claiming what they’re free of — if a "contains" label is wrong, a kid skips a safe treat; if a "free from" label is wrong, a kid gets hurt. A bowl of non-food treats (stickers, glow sticks) alongside the candy quietly covers the kids who can’t have any of it.
Drinks: one warm, one cold
Hot apple cider at 6–8 oz per person — a gallon serves 16–20 — plus whatever cold drinks your crowd expects at 2 per person. If adults are staying past the trick-or-treat shift, the cider takes additions nicely, and that’s all we’ll say about that.
The timeline
- 4:00 — chili on the stove (or reheating: it’s better made the day before), cornbread in the oven.
- 5:00 — buffet opens. Bowls, spoons, toppings, done.
- 5:45 — costumes on. The chili holds on low for stragglers and returning chaperones.
- 6:00 — porch shift begins: one adult on candy duty, everyone else walks the route.
- 7:30 — the second wave: chaperones come back hungry. This is why you made the bigger pot.
Quick answers
How much chili for 20 people?
About a gallon and a half for a mixed crowd of adults and kids — 4–5 lbs of ground beef. Scale from 1–1¼ cups per adult, half per kid.
Can I make everything ahead?
Chili genuinely improves overnight, cornbread is fine baked that morning, and the toppings take ten minutes to set out. Halloween rewards the make-ahead host more than any other party.
What about dessert?
You’re joking, right? The dessert is arriving by pillowcase at 7:30. Put out one plate of something for the adults and call it done.
